Advising Tips
...and other CPP Life Hacks
1. Take responsibility for your advising. Know and understand your degree requirements and prerequisites.
2. All students must use MyPlanner on Bronco to create a personal roadmap of courses.
3. Make an appointment to see your advisor. Dropping in doesn’t guarantee you will be seen and get your issue resolved.
4. Look up info on Bronco and CPP website and bring necessary paperwork with you to your appointment.
3 STEPS TO BETTER ADVISING
STEP 1
Find your Advisor listed on Bronco Direct. If none is listed, please see the Art Office.
STEP 2
Find your Advisor's Office Hours, location, and email address in the department's faculty listing page.
STEP 3
Visit or email your Advisor for an appointment. See your advisor at least once a year. If you have a hold, schedule an appointment two weeks before your registration date.
Got a HOLD? Here’s how to fix it:
GPA-Related Holds (See: How to Remove Holds)
Your negative service indicator on Bronco will say one of the following: Early Warning, At-Risk/Low Good-Standing, Academic Probation, or Academic Disqualification. You will need to complete several documents and tasks. Schedule an appointment with your advisor and bring the following completed documents to your meeting:
- Acompleted MyPlanner, “View as PDF,” and print it.
- Use the CPP Grade Calculator to figure out the grades you need to get out of the situation and print it out
- Write a professional letter explaining the reasons for your low GPA and specific steps you are going to take to raise your GPA.
- 125% Unit Hold (Super Senior) (See: CPP Graduation Plan Worksheet)
Complete both sides of a Graduation Planning Worksheet. Schedule an appointment with your advisor and bring the completed form to your meeting.
Financial Aid-Related Holds
Please see the Financial Aid office.
Solutions for Common Degree Progress Problems
Missing one unit on Art History sequence on courses transferred from semester schools
Identify three (3) unused ART units and inform your advisor you need these applied to your Art History 212, 213, 214 sequence. If you don’t have 3 unused ART units to make up the difference, you will need to take an ART course that is at least 3 units.
COM 131/L and ART 275A
Students will see different photography courses on their Degree Progress Report depending on their Curriculum Year:
- Before the 2012 curriculum year: COM131/131L (2/2)
- During the 2013-2014 curriculum year: ART 275A (3) or COM 131/131A (2/2)
- After 2014 curriculum year: ART 275A (3)
These courses are interchangeable but note that COM 131/L is a total of 4 units and ART 275A is 3 units. If you take ART 275A and COM 131/L is on your DPR, inform your advisor that you need to apply one unused ART unit to the COM 131/L area on your DPR. If you don't have 1 unused ART unit to make up the difference, you will need to take an ART course that is at least 1 unit.
Other FYI Items
Prerequisites
Prerequisites are tied to course and academic year, NOT to the student’s curriculum year. Check the prerequisites each Spring when registering for Fall.
Curriculum Year
A student's Curriculum Year is determined by the Academic Year you started in the Graphic Design or Art History program at CPP.
Grade Forgiveness
Students may seek Grade Forgiveness through course repetition to improve GPA by replacing up to 16 units of coursework. Complete the Grade Forgiveness Through Course Repetition form. (See: Course Repetition Form)
Transfer Credit
Check your Unused and Transfer Credit courses see if any units can be applied to your degree.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal from a course after 3 weeks or the 15th day of instruction requires a drop petition. Use the Course Withdrawal Request form. All drops at this time must be documented and must be for serious and compelling reasons. (See: Course Withdrawal Form)
Retroactive Withdrawal
Students who receive “WU” and/or “F” grades in ALL coursework taken during a quarter may petition to the Retroactive Withdrawal Committee. The grade(s) may be retroactively changed to the Administrative grade of “W,” if he/she can provide documentation that supports the compelling reasons for the unofficial withdrawal during the quarter(s) in question or/and any grades received (e.g. letter grades A - F) were not earned.
A petition entitled Request for Retroactive Withdrawal is available in the Office of Student Success, CLA Building, 2nd Floor (next to the Registrar’s Office). A student has up to one (1) calendar year of the last day of the quarter in question to apply for retroactive withdrawal. A student need not be enrolled at the University at the time the application for retroactive withdrawal is submitted.
