Assistant Professor, Urban and Regional Planning

We seek a candidate with demonstrated strength in transportation planning, with secondary emphases in land use and/or urban design.  The successful candidate should be capable of leading instruction and research in transportation planning and in one or more of the following areas: GIS, sustainable community design, spatial analysis, research methods, and environmental justice. The position requires teaching, advising, scholarly activities, and service to the profession, the department, college, and university.  This faculty member will contribute to instruction and research in the areas of specialization, including developing curricula for the department’s accredited undergraduate and master’s programs in planning.  We have a preference for candidates who are interested in meeting some of their service responsibilities by addressing transportation issues around Cal Poly Pomona.  We are especially interested in candidates who will thrive in an inclusive environment and who can contribute to our department’s diversity through their teaching, scholarship, and/or service to the institution. We seek candidates who will further the department’s commitment to diversifying the urban planning profession. 


Minimum Qualifications 

  • A Ph.D. in urban planning or related fields from an accredited (or recognized equivalent) university program completed by the time of appointment. 

  • Relevant professional experience 

  • Relevant teaching experience at the university level 

  • Demonstration of ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, creative and scholarly activities, teaching, advising, and service while working in an inclusive environment. 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications 

  • Current AICP membership 

  • Record of engagement with historically underrepresented and diverse groups or communities 

  • Recognition of effective mentoring and advising of students 

  • Record of active participation in professional organizations

The College

The Department

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona offers accredited Bachelors and Masters professional programs in urban and regional planning, focusing on applied planning, service, and research. The Department’s programs emphasize interdisciplinary learning and linkages between practice and theory.
