TAU SIGMA DELTA LECTURE: Lawrence Scarpa, Brooks + Scarpa
Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, a pioneer in the field of sustainable design, is the featured speaker in a lecture sponsored by the Cal Poly Pomona chapter of the Tau Sigma Delta Honors Society. Named 2004's "Emerging Voice" in architecture by the Architectural League of New York, he is the co-founder of the Los Angeles-based firm Brooks + Scarpa, and in 2009 was honored with the Life Achievement Award by Interior Design Magazine.
The firm's Colorado Court in Santa Monica was the nation's first LEED-certified multi-family housing project, while his Solar umbrella house in Venice gain national acclaim when the American Institute of Architects named it one of country's Top 10 Green Projects. Its Step Up on 5th (a 46-unit special-needs affordable housing development for those living with mental illness) incorporated energy-efficient and passive design strategies. These three projects have the distinction of being the only projects in AIA history to earn the organization's National Design Award, the AIA COTE (Committee on the Environment) Top 10 Green Building Award, and the National AIA Special Interest Award.
