Adrian Tenney is a visual artist, musician, and gardener from both Toronto, Canada and Southern California. She is passionate about environmental and social justice issues, and communicates these through her art, songwriting, recordings, videos, and live performance, as well as through her work in drought tolerant gardening.
After graduating from CalArts with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art with a focus on landscape painting and botanical illustration, Adrian worked as an independent contracter in drought tolerant residential landscaping. From consulting and designing, to installing and maintenance, Adrian developed her gardening skills through completing lawn-replacement projects before going to work in the CA Native Garden at Descanso Gardens. Adrian also earned an Advanced Gardener certificate from Pierce College, where she studied botany, sustainable landscaping, and plant identification.
Adrian creates music under the name Badlands, and produces a regular comic strip and zine called Bite the Cactus, where she explores themes of nature and the environment and the ways in which our society interacts with them. Social justice is also critical to Adrian’s practice. In 2016 she helped organize a community forum on behalf of the Santa Clarita Muslim community, and a benefit concert on behalf of three local organizations providing assistance to womxn dealing with homelessness and domestic violence, and queer and transgender youth. She was also a drum coach and band manager for Queer Rock Camp SoCal in 2015!
Adrian is interested in wildlife habitat-restoration, water-harvesting, drought-management, and sustainable/ecological design to continue her work in Southern California in the future.
