Hello! My name is Olivia Miethke and I am in my 3rd year of studying Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, with minors in Horticulture and Water Resource Management/Irrigation Design. I realize the impact Landscape Architects can play in combating global issues, and I want to be a part of the solution. Improving the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of the landscapes around us is a way I can leave the earth a better place than when I got here. I hope to create healthier cities and ecologies through the design of places that are responsive to place and time, will connect people with their surroundings, and provide a space for culture and relationships with our environment to flourish.
The skills I have learned in the field have allowed me to get a deeper understanding of different aspects of design, horticulture, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Spending time working at various nurseries during my education has allowed me to learn and grow and as a student and worker in a both a hands-on and intellectual way. I can confidently solve challenges that I will be confronted with on a day to day basis, like proper communication, difficult site conditions, budget concerns, and time management because of my time spent in real world situations. My encounters have allowed me to see firsthand that the ability to think critically, ask questions, and view different perspectives with an open mind is essential to success, whether personal or professional.
Being bravely curious and passionately creative in life and in work are lifelong qualities I have learned from CPPLA and will carry throughout my career. I am always looking to to participate in meaningful work and extracurricular activities that will enrich my college experience and allow me to support myself as I study to earn my degree.
