The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) celebrates Margarita P. McCoy Scholarship with a seminar with Dr. Ann Forsyth, professor of urban planning at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She works mainly on the social aspects of physical planning and urban development. The big issue behind her research and practice is how to make more sustainable and healthy cities. She will make a presentation on "What is a healthy city?" and open up a discussion with students.
The scholarship is dedeicated for late Margarita P. McCoy (1923 – 2016) who was a professor and chair of URP from 1976 to 1989. She was the first woman to chair a university department of urban planning in the United States. During her 50-year career, she pressed university departments nationwide to open their doors to women and minorities. She was active on several professional and accreditation boards, and served on the La Habra Heights Planning Commission.
